I don’t do a ton of baking around the holidays like a lot of people seem to. My family is not that big that I require dozens and dozens of cookies. But I do like to bake, so of course I squeeze in one or two kinds of cookie. This year I decided I wanted to try making Pfeffernussen. If you are unfamiliar with these cookies, they are of German origin, very spicy, with molasses and black pepper in them. The translation of Pfeffernussen is “pepper nuts”, although my recipe doesn’t call for nuts I understand that some do. My mother in law used to get me Pfeffernussen from a bakery near her house that wer pretty good. But the bakery closed, and all we have been able to find are the horrible packaged ones in the grocery stores. Clearly time to try making some myself. Well, let me say, this is one of those things that you finally try and think “Wow, I wish I had done this sooner!” Not only were they easy to make they are SO. GOOD.
Spicy, sweet, soft, with a crisp crust, I am afraid these are not going to last until Christmas. Actually, I’ll be surprised if they last until Saturday.
