A friend of mine makes papier mache figures – Santas, angels, snowmen and the like. I asked her last year to teach me how to do it, but we were both just too busy to get around to it. This year however,
we have been sculpting away. This is my Pere Noel, patiently awaiting some paint. I think he’s going to look pretty good once I get some colour on him, but there’s something about him in his unadorned white.
He’s kind of like the snow, silent and waiting.
The best part about papier mache is that it can all be done with stuff you would usually throw out or recycle. In this case the head was made with a styrofoam ball, but you could use some really tightly packed newspaper. The rest is newspaper, cut up cereal boxes and used tissue paper – the kind you would find in a gift bag, not the type you use for your nose, as dear Joey thought. Duh.
I’m sure he’ll be by to visit again once he’s finished.
