I May Have Created a Monster

And not a toy monster either (that’s still ot come!)

First, some background:

My mom is not a “creative type”.  She doesn’t knit, scrapbook, draw, anything like that.  She is much more at home with stock reports and balance sheets and that type of thing.  She doens’t really get my obsession to create, but she tries to be nice about it.  When I started knitting I was always on the lookout for something to make for her.  Nothing seemed right.  I didn’t want to make anything too big, because there was the very real possibility that she wouldn’t wear/use it.  But she’s Mom, right, so I had to find something.  Then I learned how to make socks.  Then second pair I ever made were for her.  They are plain everyday vanilla socks, a bit of ribbing on top, flap heel, stockinette for everything else.  Mom doesn’t like frou-frou.  I made fthem out of Shelridge Farms Soft Touch Ultra Handpaint sock yarn. Lovely stuff that, I highly recommend it.  That yarn is nice and soft, and I found a good “Mom” colourway.  I figured I couldn’t go wrong – everybody needs socks, and Mom is always complaining that her feet are cold, so some nice wool socks should be a welcome gift.  I must admit that I was still surprised the first time I saw her wear them.  Turns out she likes them.  A lot.  Enough to hand wash them and lay them out every time she wears them (they are not superwash).  “Whoo!”  I thought, “I never have to worry about what to make her again!”  And indeed, I was planning on making her a pair for this Christmas. 

So I’m at her place a couple of weeks ago when she hands me the Knit Picks catologue.  She gets one bcause she ordered me a set of needles a year or 2 ago.  She always saves it for me, just in case I didn’t get mine.  Never in a million years did I think she actually looked at it.  So you could have pushed me over with a feather when she flipped open the front page, pointed to thier new sock colours and said “I read that you can wash this yarn.  Can you make me socks out of that colour?”
